Integral Launches New Disaster Response for the Haiti Crisis

Integral has launched a Disaster Response for the crisis in Haiti. Currently seven Integral Members are responding to this humanitarian crisis.[1]

Out of a population of 11 million people, more than 5.5 million require humanitarian assistance and four million people are currently in need of food aid. It is estimated that more than one million children are not able to attend school. [Source here and here].

The eruption of gang violence on 29th February in the capital Port-au-Prince has worsened an already disastrous situation. Universities, schools, hospitals, prisons, and banks as well as critical businesses and government infrastructure have been destroyed by gangs. The impact of the current crisis comes on top of repeated natural disasters and a cholera outbreak across the whole country.

The six Integral Members responding have long-standing work in Haiti and are working in the following sectors: Food Security, Nutrition, Livelihoods, Shelter and Education. This new Integral response will enable our Members to respond to the current crisis both through direct operations, supporting one other’s work and trusted Partners. The sharing of communications resources across the alliance will enable fundraising campaigns to be launched in more of our Members’ headquarter countries.

Food for the Hungry raised the Integral Alert for this crisis. Rod Beadle, their Relief and Humanitarian Affairs/WASH Director says, “Food for the Hungry has been working in Haiti since 2008. Our staff and their families are living through the current nightmare of violence and conflict while still providing critical food, shelter, and WASH services to the people they serve. Our membership of the Integral Alliance helps us to leverage partnerships with other faith-based Members which will allow us all to accomplish more for more people than any of us could do individually.”

In the initial stages of an Integral response, calls are held as frequently as necessary, so that Members can share information in the critical phase when needs are acute. The Integral online platform enables Members to share photos and stories, response plans and funding needs.
