‘Do not be afraid Zechariah’, said the angel
‘You have been named for a purpose
And now God remembers –
Your prayer has been heard!
Name your promised son John
And your joy and gladness
Will go before heaven’s highest song.
John, graced by God
Will turn hearts in turmoil to peace
Make the unprepared ready, ready to meet their God.’

‘Do not be afraid Mary’, said the angel
‘You are beloved indeed
You, a virgin will give birth.
Name this miraculous son Jesus –
The Son of the Most High, Son of Go
The greatest of the great –
A King whose kingdom will never end.
Those barren have conceived
Godhead will be reduced to a seed
For nothing, nothing is impossible with God!’

‘Do not be afraid shepherds’, said the angel
‘To you who watch over your flocks by night
I bring good news of great joy
That’s for all people.
Yes, this day to you is born the Messiah
The Lord, a beautiful Saviour
And it is with you that the heavenly host
Share their highest praises
Of Glory to God
And peace among those He favours.’

‘Do not be afraid’, says the angel
‘No matter how dark or cold this season
God is with you, Emmanuel.
A great light is shining in the darkness
Dispelling death’s shadow.
A new day has dawned
Your prayer has been heard!
Believe in the God of the possible!
It is to you this day
That a beautiful Saviour is born.’

‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government will be on His shoulders.
And He will be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of His government
And peace there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
And over His kingdom,
Establishing and upholding it
With justice and righteousness
From that time on and forever.
