Integral Alliance has launched an Integral Disaster Response for Tropical Cyclone Eloise …
Three Members have opted in to this response and are currently responding both directly on the ground and through their Partners. They have identified urgent needs across a range of sectors including shelter, food and COVID-19 prevention.
On 23rd January, Tropical Cyclone Eloise made landfall over central Mozambique with heavy rainfall and strong winds, in an area that is still recovering from the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Idai in 2019. More than 314,000 people have been affected by Eloise and 20,012 are currently displaced. However, these numbers are likely to rise as access to the affected areas is limited due to damaged roads and bridges [Source here].
Integral Members are sharing information on the impact of the Cyclone, concept notes and media with a view to seeing what more can be done together. Institutional funding is scarce and there is a general lack of media attention which makes it more difficult to launch fundraising campaigns.
Rebecca Carney, Program Officer, Relief and Humanitarian Affairs at Food for the Hungry (FH) says, “The families in the area where we are responding were still recovering from the impact of 2019 Cyclone Idai and had hopes of an agriculture year with healthy harvests. This new Cyclone is a devastating setback, especially for these communities. At FH we will continue to seek out communities where food and water needs are unmet, as well as to assess crop and livestock damage.”
Rebecca continues, “Collaborating with the government and other humanitarian organisations is imperative, against a backdrop of scarce funding and resources. It is very much our hope and prayer that through Integral’s coordination we will be able to achieve more together and maximise our collective impact.”
In the initial stages of an Integral response, calls are held as frequently as necessary, so that Members can share information in the critical phase when needs are acute. The Integral online platform enables Members to share photos and stories, response plans and funding needs.
