Child Protection in Emergencies – Joint Field Training

In May 2019 Viva network offered Child Protection in Emergencies (CPIE) Training to Integral Members in the context of the Integral joint response in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. This workshop, which took place in Malawi, was an opportunity for agencies, regardless of their sector specific activities, to learn about mainstreaming child protection. There were 26 participants from 11 organisations present – including representatives from Integral, World Renew, World Relief and Tearfund UK …

Kezia M’Clelland, Children in Emergencies Specialist with Viva, says, “It was great to see the collaboration from Integral Members in pulling the workshop together at short notice. World Renew and Tearfund UK provided logistics support on the ground, and Transform Aid Australia and Tearfund Ireland supported with funding. It was wonderful to then see so many different Members and local partners sharing experiences together, learning and coming up with key actions for their Cyclone Idai responses to integrate child protection in emergencies.”

Kezia continues: “Viva is really glad to partner with Integral because of our shared belief that impact is multiplied by working together. It’s been great to share our tools and learning around simple tools for genuinely considering ways to focus on children in all sectors of emergency response. We’ve been really pleased to support Integral Members in their individual responses and also in collaborative workshops like these, which we very much hope we can do more of!”

Andrea Varner, who works for World Concern as their Global Community and Public Health Technical Advisor, was seconded to Integral for the role of Short-term Coordinator in Mozambique. She was able to travel to Malawi to take part in the workshop. Andrea says, “It’s wonderful to have the opportunity for Integral Members to come together to focus specifically on the needs of children and collaborate together on how to improve the integration of protection principles in their emergency response activities. It demonstrates the commitment Integral Members have for prioritising the rights and needs of children in humanitarian programming.”

The workshop was based around guidance on putting into practice the online toolkit developed by Viva in partnership with Food for the Hungry, Transform Aid Australia, World Relief and Tearfund Ireland, with input from other Integral Members. The workshop also highlighted the new section on integrating Child Protection in Emergencies into other response sectors.
